Icy cold winds hit Melbourne on Saturday night, with low-level snow and frost sweeping across parts of regional Victoria, bringing an early taste of winter.
Smatterings of rain fell across Greater Melbourne, Central and Western Victoria, with lighter falls recorded across the state.
Blackwood, Rhyll, Wallan and Yarragon South areas recorded the most rain across the state overnight, with some areas reaching up to 6mm.
Snow fell around Victoria’s Alpine region, including at Falls Creek resort, bringing an early start to winter.
Ski resorts at Lake Mountain and Hotham hailed the first snowfall of the season on Instagram, with Mt Baw Baw measuring 13cm of snow overnight.
“A significant cold front is moving through southeast Australia, bringing an early taste of winter,” the Bureau of Meteorology said on Twitter.
“Shower activity will be focused around Tasmania and southern Victoria, with lighter falls elsewhere.
“Snow levels will drop to 700m across Tasmania, and 900m for Victoria and southern NSW.
“Huge swells will lead to dangerous coastal conditions.“
Temperatures in Victoria have already plunged this week, down from 30C on Thursday to 16C on Saturday.
Meanwhile Canberra is expected to plunge below zero on Monday.
The low will be -1C, while it‘ll be a warmer 17C in the daytime.
Hobart will be a cool 7C overnight at the weekend, with snow on Mt Wellington possible.
Adelaide will see a low of 12C over the weekend, with Sunday reaching 19C.
Sydney will escape the cold blast, with highs of 25C expected on Saturday.
