Man, 69, dies after being struck on the head by a golf ball during competition

A man has died after being hit with a golf ball at the Portarlington Golf Club on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula.

Rod Gurney was playing in a men’s competition at the club when he was struck by the ball on Tuesday.

The 69-year-old was treated at the clubhouse by ambulance officers before being taken home.

However, his condition worsened later that day and he was subsequently taken to a Geelong hospital, before being transferred to Melbourne.

The club reported that his condition deteriorated throughout the week and that he died on Saturday afternoon.

“It is with immense sadness that Portarlington Golf Club advises that Rod Gurney, a much-loved member, has passed away,” a statement put out by the club read.

The Portarlington Golf Club said the club was in “constant contact with the family” to offer support.

“With the assistance of Golf Australia, the club’s immediate focus is to support the members and staff directly involved in the accident and provide counselling as required,” the statement read.

“We ask that you please keep the family and his golfing partners on the day in your thoughts and allow them the privacy they need as they go through this difficult time.”

Mr Gurney’s family said that although his passing was tragic, “we are heartened to know that he passed doing something he loved”.

“Rod was a dedicated family man who loved watching the Geelong Cats, playing golf and travelling in his caravan,” the family said in a statement.

“As a family we understand that accidents happen during competitive sport and our hearts go out to his Portarlington golf mates and those who witnessed the incident.”
