Channel 7 presenter Abbey Gelmi can’t wait to get all dressed up and legendary rocker Jon Stevens is anxious to perform as The Championships begin at Randwick this Saturday.
Donning her first pair of stilettos for the season, Channel 7 presenter and Ultimate Tag host Abbey Gelmi is all smiles as she gears up for the The Championships at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
It is day one of the Sydney racing’s Grand Finals and one of Gelmi’s favourite days on the sporting calendar.
“I think The Championships are the pinnacle of racing, particularly here in Sydney, there’s just something special about this time,” Gelmi said.
“It’s based around the track. So from a lot of the marquees you can see the track itself and that’s not the same as some other meetings around the country.”
As well as a bit of a racing expert, Gelmi doubles as a style afficianado and she admits race fashion is an important part of the autumn season.
“It marries my two worlds, sport and fashion. I think I love the fashion a little too much, you can go a bit over the top, especially during autumn,” she said
Gelmi shared some fashion wisdom for autumn racing season — to be on trend. She
advies to steer away from brighter spring shades and instead opt for navy and black.
“It’s a little bit more demure. You can absolutely still wear colour. But I would add different layers and textures to it as well.
“If you want to go traditional, think enclosed shoes with covered shoulders. And of course, wear a jacket, it’s going to get cold.” she added.
Meanwhile, rocker Jon Stevens is hoping his luck holds on the second day of the Championships next week — on the stage and on the track.
He was booked to perform at the Golden Slipper last year but that meeting was cancelled because of COVID.
And this year’s concert at the same event at Rosehill Gatrdens was washed out by once-in-50-year rainfall.
“We are hoping The Championships will be third time lucky,” Stevens said.
“We are looking forward to a really good day so that we can celebrate and rock out after winning or losing a few bucks on the horses.”
Stevens and his band will be performing all the greatest hits from his Noiseworks and INXS tour, which has earned rave reviews, in The Theatre of the Horse on the second day of The Championships at Royal Randwick on Saturday April 17.
This Saturday, crowds will be entertained after the races by Hot Dub Time Machine DJ Tom Lowndes, bringing his effervescent spin on today’s biggest music trends.
Stevens will be watching the big race, The Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes, ahead of his performance. But do not ask him for a tip.
“I grew up around horses in New Zealand as a kid. Trentham racecourse was just around the corner and we were always there,” he said.
“But I don’t study the form, I just have the odd tipple.
“I will turn up on Saturday and have a look and then ask someone who looks like they know what they are doing for a tip,” he said.
Like everyone else, he has had an interesting year through the pandemic.
“I walked the Kokoda Track with my son Levi and came out of the jungle, after 11 days of hearing nothing, and straight into a pandemic and two weeks quarantine,” he said.
That experience makes it all the more special to be performing before a live audience at Randwick.
“I love the races. I love the energy and that everyone is happy and has won or lost a few bucks,” he said.
“It’s a great Australian pastime and I’m very happy to be a part of it.”
