Inside the Science: Beauty Rush New Zealand Signs Joint Skin Nutrition Research Laboratory Agreement With the University of Münster’s Dermatology Department

A Research-Led Path for Oral Beauty
AUCKLAND, New Zealand — The oral beauty category has long suffered from a credibility gap: consumer enthusiasm running far ahead of published evidence. Beauty Rush, the Auckland-founded beauty drink brand whose flagship CELL X BEAUTY has drawn attention across the Oceania wellness market, is moving to close that gap from the inside — on October 13, at a ceremony in Auckland, it signed an agreement to establish a joint skin nutrition research laboratory with the Department of Dermatology, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Münster, Germany.
Under the agreement, the laboratory’s planned research will centre on how ingestible nutrients interact with the skin’s structural and renewal processes — questions central to skin nutrition science, and to the formulation philosophy behind the brand’s three-product range: CELL X BEAUTY, CELL+ BEAUTY and LIGHT+ BEAUTY.
“From day one, our formulation standard was ‘published research first,’” said a spokesperson for Beauty Rush New Zealand. “Every active in our drinks was selected on the strength of the scientific literature — not on trend cycles. A joint laboratory is the natural next step: contributing to that literature, not just citing it.”
The Actives Behind the Range
The brand’s formulation dossier reads less like a marketing deck than a reading list. Across the range, four ingredient families recur — each chosen, the company says, on the basis of peer-reviewed research into skin structure, vitality and renewal.
Ergothioneine, a naturally occurring amino acid antioxidant, has been the subject of growing research interest for its role in cellular protection and its accumulation in tissues exposed to oxidative stress. It anchors the flagship CELL X BEAUTY complex alongside sea cucumber extract — long studied in food science for its bioactive compounds — AAKG and Ca-AKG, forms of alpha-ketoglutarate explored in vitality research, and the brand’s signature New Zealand mānuka sap extract.
CELL+ BEAUTY, the brand’s firming and contour formula, pairs sea cucumber extract and ergothioneine with spermidine — a polyamine widely studied in cellular renewal research — and AKG. LIGHT+ BEAUTY, formulated for brightness and even tone, builds on mānuka sap extract with pterostilbene, pine bark extract and ellagic acid, botanical antioxidants selected for their relevance to pigmentation and dullness research.
The brand is careful — conspicuously so — about what this science does and does not support. “We say ‘selected on the strength of published research,’ and we mean exactly that,” the spokesperson said. “Our products are food-form supplements, not medicines. They are designed to support the skin’s own processes over weeks and months of consistent use. We would rather under-promise and be believed than over-promise and be read once.”
Why Münster, and Why Now
The agreement was signed in the presence of Professor Thomas A. Luger, Beauty Rush’s Honorary Chief Scientific Advisor and one of Europe’s most decorated dermatologists. A Senior Professor at the University of Münster’s Faculty of Medicine, Professor Luger directed the dermatology department at University Hospital Münster for 28 years, served as Dean of the Medical Faculty, is a past president of the German Dermatological Society, and has authored around 800 scientific publications on the skin’s immune system and inflammatory processes. While in Auckland, Professor Luger also toured the brand’s New Zealand production facility — which has passed audits by international inspection body SGS, covering plant environment, personnel management, equipment cleaning, material controls and production records — reviewing its production line and batch-by-batch quality inspection processes. The brand’s flagship formulation uses New Zealand mānuka sap extract rather than water as its base — a design intended to reduce dilution and increase nutrient density per unit volume.
According to the brand, the laboratory’s initial research programme is expected to cover the bioavailability of beauty-drink actives and the role of nutritional support in skin vitality across different age groups — drawing on Europe’s deep expertise in skin pharmacology, skin barrier and microbiome research, photobiology and the mechanisms of inflammatory ageing, and sitting squarely within food and nutrition science. The laboratory’s work is now being planned, and its future output, the brand says, will be held to the same standard it applies to its labels: published research first.
Industry observers note that formal research partnerships are becoming a dividing line in the oral beauty category, separating brands investing in long-term evidence from those riding short-term trends. For a young brand, the move is both scientific and strategic: credible research partnerships strengthen formulation credibility, and formulation credibility feeds media and consumer trust.
Part of a Wider Institutional Year
The laboratory agreement caps a year of institution-building for the Auckland brand. Beauty Rush has launched a cultural heritage initiative supporting Quanzhou’s centuries-old Zanhua floral headdress tradition in China, and on October 13 it convened The Era of Her, its inaugural Women’s Leadership Dialogue, in Auckland — an afternoon that closed with the signatories, Professor Luger among them, signing The Era of Her Manifesto in a collective tribute to women’s achievements. Together, the programmes position the brand at an intersection it claims deliberately: science, culture, and women’s advancement.
